“It’s the ride of life the journey from here to there living and loving every moment like we have none to spare.” ― Jess “Chief” Brynjulson

The biker lifestyle has evolved far beyond a mere hobby. Today, it stands as a thriving subculture, uniting motorcycle enthusiasts who cherish the open road and the unique lifestyle it offers.

In today's blog, we've had the pleasure of connecting with Ross, a member of the Valley Road Biker's Club to delve deeper into what this vibrant lifestyle truly entails!

1. How did you get involved in the biker lifestyle and what does it mean to you?

Years ago my father-in-law decided to get back into biking and that was my chance to join him on two wheels.

I don’t think a biker can explain the feeling. As soon as you put a helmet on, the world’s noise disappears, and you forget about the pressure of daily life as you allow that sense of freedom to engulf you.

The adrenaline from the ride and the friendships you form with like-minded people are really special.

2. What's the most rewarding aspect of being a part of a biker club?

I’m not part of a biker club, Valley Road Motorcycles is for the biker community in general where all bikers are welcome to pop in to talk motorcycles, have a beer together and discuss the future bike trips or bike builds.

3. Can you share a memorable experience or journey that stands out from your time riding motorcycles?

The most recent great experience was selling a Harley Davidson motorcycle to an 85-year-old!!

I’ve never seen a more excited individual ever, when he came back after the test ride and removed his helmet he looked 20 years younger and smiling from ear to ear. I feel sorry for the old age home, there’s going to be a few ladies queuing to go for a ride.

4. How do you feel the biker culture has evolved over the years?

The most important part of biker culture is respect, etiquette, and good values.

The new bikers entering the biking community need to continue with the foundation set. Adventure bikes have grown tremendously over the last few years due to our poor roads, and a lot more bikers are keen to explore nature on two wheels.

It's always nice to see the new generation building their own bikes, struggling, and learning at the same time. The immense self-satisfaction of completing the build is a great life lesson - “hard work and dedication pay off.”

5. What kind of preparation and maintenance goes into maintaining your bike for long rides?

Depending on when last you serviced your bike, tyres, tyre pressure, lights, indicators, brakes and normally a fluid change. Never forget about the bike wash and detailing before you leave on a long trip and when you return, as we all know a clean bike rides better!!

The more you look after your bike the more your bike will look after you.

6. Are there any misconceptions about bikers that you'd like to address?

The amount of money the biking community raises for charity is amazing. People need to understand that bikers are good people who love two-wheels.

Riding motorcycles is not a hobby it’s a lifestyle.

7. What's your favourite route or destination to ride to and why?

We are blessed in PE to have the ability to travel to different locations which are not too far away. St Francis, Garden Route, Kenton area, inland.

Sunday mornings normally involve “chasing the Animals”. First stop Valley Road Motorcycles, then Thornhill, Prickly Pear, Three Legged Pig, Dizzy Dolphin, and finally, The Golden Duck.

It’s nice to stop and chat and share a few stories and jokes. Riding a Harley Davidson will always attract that friend who places a box under your bike just in case it leaks oil!

8. How do you choose the right gear and apparel for riding, especially footwear?

You dress for the fall, not the ride!

Protective gear is essential. Proper protective jackets, gloves, and helmets are essential. Budget also plays a big role in choosing riding gear because the essentials are available, but the nice-to-have items come at a price.
Footwear for me, is all about foot and ankle support. The boot must be waterproof because there is nothing worse than getting caught in the rain without this extra protection. Obviously, the boot must be super comfy, because when you are off the bike you tend to spend a lot of time walking around looking at bikes.

9. Are there specific features or qualities in Cat Footwear that you find particularly beneficial for riding?

The quality of Cat footwear is great! They are rugged, tough, comfy, and last a long time. The new styles of boots are on point when it comes to design and functionality.
